Secondary issue (climate on/off in combination with flickering of dash etc) ended up being a fault with the alternator (even though it was previously tested).

The fan speed would. increase and blow warmer air continuously until the "cabin temp" was at 22 and. would continue to maintain that temp. The air being blown out until that happens. was around 22. In the mk5 if I do the same operation, the air being blown out is like selecting max. temp on the mk4.

When the car starts, invariably the heat on the passenger side will climb to max. You can stop it by touching the DUAL button but it seems to have a mind of its own and will climb again randomly. The Ford dealer seems to know of the problem but won't tell me the fix or cost. They want me to bring it in for a diagnostic test.
